Metal Injection Molding (MIM) is a combination of Powder Metallurgy (PM) and Plastic Injection Molding. The technology provides alloying advantages of Powder Metallurgy along with Complex shape making capabilities of Plastic Injection Molding. Metal Injection Molding is a “Green technology”

MIM Process (Starting from Molding till Sintering)

Metal Injection Molding (MIM) technology starts with Feedstock or raw material, which is a combination of metal powders mixed with plastic/polymer binders.

Molding

This feedstock is then injected in a Injection Molding machine where feedstock is heated and injected into a die/mold under high pressure and speed similar to plastic injection molding. After injection the die is allowed to cool to room temperature which will give us “Green Part”. The die can have multiple cavities to meet the production requirements.

Debinding

In the next step a portion of the plastic/polymer is removed. Process of removing the binders is called as “Debinding”

Sintering

In this process, remaining binders are removed and metal particles weld together to get the solid shape. The density after sintering is almost equal to that of wrought metal.
